After decades of academic, professional and personal pursuits I found two truths in my life. When I made choices based on my highest aspirations I never went wrong, even while it might have resulted in more work. And, that in order to realize that first truth, I needed to get very clear on what, really, my highest aspirations were, how I was currently living within them and how I aspired to live within them.

I began to build this understanding while I was in the midst of all the busyness of a life. As a young professional promoted to a regional management position out of my home province and unexpectedly pregnant, the over-riding question that guided my next step was: ”Where do I want this child to be rooted?” And I chose to move us closer to my home roots.

Then I became a single Mom and my question was: “What do I want my child to learn about living an independent life?” I chose to go back to University and then moved into public sector work.

As a midlife professional, married, and now with two children, my guiding question was: “How am I living in such a way that my family sees possibility in their lives?” And I chose to earn a graduate degree, followed by accepting an executive posting with an international start-up.

When I posed and answered these questions I was taking decisions that were new in the framework of my immediate and larger family structures, and in some instances, new in the workplaces I entered. What they were more importantly within were my values – even though I was not consciously identifying them as such.

Over the last few years I chose to become a 500 hr certified yoga instructor and a professional life coach. These choices brought me deeper into work that refined focus, clarity and action within the framework of my values. Today I live in intentionally and continuously aligned choices.
